Range Rover Charging System Fault

When charging my Range Rover, it makes a small humming sound. Dash board notice came on CHARGING SYSTEM FAULT. Dash board notice came on CHARGING. The Range Rover 400e and P400e have a single phase charging system with type 2 connector. It can charge up to 7 kW/h. For it's 13.1 kWh capacity, it would take 2,5 hours to fully charge from completely empty. Our charging cables are built with a high quality European brand electric cable, which is 20% lighter then the usual Chinese import cable.

Charging System Fault warning

Hello,
I've got a problem with my Dec 2009 (2010 facelift) 3.6 TDV8 Vogue, for which any advice would be gratefully received.
A couple of weeks ago, on trying to start, dash went crazy and wouldn't start. Put on charger for a few hours and all was good.
There were no battery dash warnings prior to that morning and none after charging battery. The only thing different was on a couple of occasions prior to that morning, when starting I got a dash message to say 'No special programmes on'.
I took the car to my local mechanic and he advised fitting a new battery which he did (a genuine Landrover battery)
Everything was fine and no dash warnings for a week. Still starts fine but I now get a Charging System Fault message and the battery icon lit on the dash. My mechanic had a look and across the battery, when ticking over, it was reading approx 14.3v, dropping back a bit when switched off. On the 'secret' diagnostic screen it reads 13.4v dropping back to 12.2v. (I've checked daily for the last week). The self test only shows an FM antenna fault
He'plugged it in' and a couple of fault codes came up, one being interior lights I think, which he cleared but there is still the Charging System Fault message.
Since the new battery was fitted the car has only been used for short local journeys. Apart from the Charging System Fault there are no other warning messages and everything drives fine.
I took it to the main dealer today who had a look at it and said it may be an intermittent alternator fault, but didn't sound over convincing. Surely if it was an alternator fault it would be throwing all kind of lights? Have seen some posts about the battery monitoring system needing to be reset. This hasn't been done and dealer didn't mention it.
If anybody has had a similar experience, or has any advice, it would certainly be gratefully received.
Thank you in advance.

it does kind of sound like an alternator fault it should never charge as low as 12.2v, and is normally over 14v especially after starting or using high load systems, if you have a search on here you will find the 3.6 is prone to alternator failure, the diode pack gives up the ghost. They can be refurbished by the committed, however changing the alternator is not for the spanner shy, and is a little bit involved.
get a labour only price and then find a Denso unit from ECP or carparts4less, as it will be the same as the LR one and much cheaper (usually)There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Blimey, that was quick, thank you.
If it is the alternator wouldn't it be setting off all kinds of other warnings? And the voltage readings seem fairly stable.
Have you had any experience with regards the battery monitoring system as it seems strange that I've only had the message after the new battery (although admittedly it did take a week to appear).
Sorry for all the questions, probably clutching at straws!
Thanks

Have you got the AGM battery or a standard one? They updated to the new battery to help with running the FBH. If you have the AGM battery then you need to get charging system reset to tell it that the battery has been changed. If it's a lead acid battery then it shouldn't need telling.
However you need to know what it had before and what it has now. If it had an AGM battery and the mechanic replaced it with a standard one or the other way round, then it may cause an issue. But not too sure on that.
I would keep monitoring the voltage on the 753 menu and watch what happens when it's under load with all the electronical gizmos like the heated screen/rear window/seats etc. Keep it on when you are driving it and monitor it over a period. Mine threw up decent voltages when it was on the way out, it the out put broke down under load There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for the reply and I'll monitor the readings carefully. I didn't make it clear on the first post, on the 753 menu it has been reading 13.3 -13.5v when running and 12.3-12.5 with the engine switched off.
I'll have a look at the battery tomorrow to see what it is, and ask my mechanic if he still has the old one, but I know it was a Land Rover battery that came out and a Land Rover one that has gone back in. I've got quite a lot of old invoices and I can't see any mention of a battery so it may be that mine was the original.
If they are both AGM does that mean the battery monitoring system doesn't need to be reset?
One other thing, the other battery went over night, with no prior warning or dash light leading up to it. Is that the norm?
many thankss

How many miles has your car done?
If it's around 85,000 then I'm sorry to say it's going to be your alternator about to give up.
Well documented on here.
New alternator from Dan is my recommendation. Genuine. Is about £220

Hi Wealy,
Thanks for the reply.
It's done 132,000 but not sure if it's ever had an alternator.
This morning (-4 and kept outside) using the 753 menu I got the following readings:
Dash on - 12v
Started up - dipped to 10.5 quickly rose to 12.5v
Switched on defrost, heated seats, lights etc and down to 12v
Drove approx 1mile (20-30mph) up to 12.5v dipping back to 12v when stopped.
Turned off defrost, seats, lights etc and straight up to 13.4v
Drove to work, another mile, but didn't monitor readings.
After 5 mins went back out in it and got the following:
Dash on - 12v
Started up - down to 10.6v but quickly up to 13.4v
Turned off seats, defrost etc and down to 11.7/11.8v
Drove for approx 1mile (50-60mph) 11.8v
Turned off defrost, seats etc and straight back up to 13.4v (approx 1mile)
I tried switching on just the front & rear screen and down to 12.8 / 12.9v
Switched ignition off and down to 12.2v
Sorry for being ignorant, but who is Dan?
Thanks

That behaviour sounds normal for the 2010MY onwards. The charge controller module looks to be doing its thing which is to vary the charge delivered based on the state of the battery and amount of load. It allegedly saves a bit of fuel by turning down the alternator output when it's not needed.
There is a software update for that module even if you remain with lead-acid battery technology. It has a different update for the AGM battery.

Hi mzplcg,
Thanks for the reply.
Are you thinking that the software update will get rid of the charging system fault warning and the alternator is ok?
(Sorry if I'm being a bit thick!!)

Yes, precisely that. The original software made the charge control module too sensitive. The update fixes that.

That's well worth a try then. I'll contact my main dealer and ask them about it (and why it wasn't mentioned before, only new alternator, 5 hrs labour, £1000 + ).
Cheers

Hi mzplcg,
Sorry, forgot to ask:
I presume that the upgrade needs to be done whether or not it is the alternator, so worth trying first?
Any idea why fault message took a week to appear after new AGM battery was fitted?
Sorry for all the questions.
cheers

Update the software and the message will go away. The alternator is fine, if it was not your car would have a new but flat battery.
Why the delay for the message? No idea, but there are still plenty of cars running around with the old firmware and they are fine. Yours happens to be one (like mine) which throws the error.

Land Rover Range Rover owners have reported 43 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

Electrical System problem of the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover 1

I had backed in to the garage and turned the knob to park. The vehicle was in park, I had removed my seatbelt but not exited the car yet and the car went backwards with some force and breaking didn't stop it, only after I hit the button to cut it off, multiple times, did it finally shut down. My husband was behind the car, getting ready to get the groceries out of the rear. This vehicle struck him and went thru the kitchen wall of our condo. His leg was stuck under the tire which that was turning on top of his calf. I am absolutely certain the car was in park bc not only was the knob set at p but also the p was on the screen. Only certain because I'm always cautious due to the proximity of distance of everything in the garage and tight quarters.

Electrical System problem of the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover 13

There needs to be a firmware update to the transmission shift logic or at the very least if a door is sensed as open automatically place vehicle in park. Backstory. . . . I've owned this vehicle for 2+ years and have mistakenly placed the vehicle in reverse (via the Dodge ram style prndl selector). When this happens I usually catch it before I exit the vehicle. Admittedly it has happened and I've almost been run over by my own car. This is a hugely dangerous issue.

Electrical System problem of the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover 18

The infotainment meant system which is the brains of the car is constantly failing to operate properly. The screen freezes leaving inability to control a/c, radio, bluetooth phone, climate, back up cameras. This vehicle has 4500 miles on it and has been in for service 3 times, it is now back at the deal a 4th time. The computer is erratic and constantly needs to updated. There have been 4 updates since I have owned the vehicle which was in Feb 2018. Landrover is fully aware of the issues but refuses to do anything about it. I have tried repurchase and replacement, which was denied and now I have to go to arbitration with the state lemon law. The cars computer is an epic failure and crosses over to most of the 2018 landrovers . These failures happen at any time , they have occurred while stopped at lights, in standstill traffic, when turning the car on, or just when driving. There is always another surprise waiting when I get in my car.

Electrical System problem of the 2006 Land Rover Range Rover 19

Tl the contact owns a 2006 Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph she saw smoke that came from the passenger side door. In addition when she put the vehicle in gear the side mirrors did not move down or up when she reversed it or went into drive. There were no injuries sustanied and no police report was filed. The vehicle was towed by and unknown company to the dealer. The dealer (Land Rover Range Rover of seattle) diagnosed that the electrical heated windshield had an internal failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,581. Jc.

Electrical System problem of the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover 20

Our new Range Rover is creating a squealing noise from the interior electronics/ac unit. It's similar to letting the air out of an inflated balloon by the spout. The pitch goes higher, lower, and all over like you are moving your hands when trying to make the balloon squeal. Our vehicle is now 3 months old, and has spent 2. 5 months in service. After recently getting our car back, the sound came back right away. The service dept. Is clueless, and already had put over 200 miles on our car 'testing it in real world conditions. ' every dealership sales & service managers, including general manager of dealer here is hardly helping and clueless. This is from Range Rover newport beach, CA. Now this sound is worse, and makes you want to smash your head through the window; it's basically sound torture. Our windshield wipers have also never worked, which is extremely dangerous. However: 1) when the windshield wipers are set to on, 2) and the vehicle is in reverse, 3) then the rear window wipers come on for some reason.

Electrical System problem of the 2006 Land Rover Range Rover 21

The contact owns a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover. When the vehicle was started, all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle would not continuously run without all of the indicators illuminating in error. The vehicle was not taken to the local dealer for repairs. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Electrical System problem of the 2006 Land Rover Range Rover 22

This vehicle was taken back by the manufacturer for electrical issues it was then resold. I just purchased it and it has serious electrical issues. I have owned it a month and it had codes within 48 hours of purchase. System failure codes. The battery is good and is drained every night and every time I go to work. This vechicle is essentially usuless and I just purchased it. It flashes random tire pressure system failure codes when it wants. Just random. It is one thing after another. Luckily nothing super safety related yet. It was manufactured wrong and was never repaired and now I am stuck with a vehicle I can't use after I have made one payment on it.

Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Range Rover 23

The first thing that happened was the ac stopped working and replaced the resistor in it twice, the same day it went out a second time the back driver side window fell. The next week I was driving home and was entering the freeway and as I accelerated the vehicle jerked hard and pulled back, and was making a squeaking sound. It corrected but now it keeps doing it. And the brake fluid a week later leaked out and I lost power in my brakes. I am afraid to drive my car!.

Electrical System problem of the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover 26

My vehicle was traveling at 40mph at a straight path on city roads with no obstacles or detour when at an instant the vehicle's drive mode logo on the shift knob began to blink continuously followed by system error code warnings flashing on the entertainment screen and driver screen and full loss of vehicle control. With complete shut down including loss of all electronics electrical power and engine failure thereafter causing the electronic emergency brakes to activate and locking the wheels. At which time the vehicle came to a violent and sudden stop resulting in a load grinding noise coming off the engine bay. The vehicle was unable to start due to no return of any electrical power to the systems electronics including exterior and interior lights. I waited for about 15 minutes before trying to start the vehicle, which took a few tries before power and vehicle engine engaged only to have the same complete vehicle failure and shut down repeated only after 200 yards from the initial failure resulting in tow service having to be called out. Keep in mind this is not the first nor the second recurrence, it has been an ongoing issue for the past few months only to be told that the problem was diagnose and corrected by an authorized Land Rover dealer. Which is far from the truth in regards to the health and safety of this vehicle. To date the cause of continued failure is unknown.

Electrical System problem of the 2006 Land Rover Range Rover 27

The contact owns a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle independently lowered and rose without the suspension switch being activated. The failure mileage was 45,000.

Electrical System problem of the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover 28

Vehicle battery was being drawn dead inexplicably. Four service visits to dealer revealed nothing other than a silly story from it that the car was not being driven long enough for the battery to recharge. A diagnostic I obtained found a constant 12 volt draw on the battery more reasonably explaining why the 3 batteries were drained dead. . . Dealer had me using a 'trickle charge' plugging into an outdoor electric outlet each night which only delayed the inevitable dead battery. I attempted to lemon law unsuccessfully under nys law. . . Read online about the 'dead battery club' among owner and thus came here. . .

Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to dealer where it was diagnosed that the right and left front brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the key fob failed to lock the hatch back. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v039000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,000. Ss.

Electrical System problem of the 2006 Land Rover Range Rover 30

The contact owns a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover. While driving various speeds, the vehicle jerked, hesitated, and the fuel and temperature gauges displayed false information. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 59,000.

Range Rover Evoque Charging System Fault

The vehicle ignition lock is not accepting the key, after removing the ignition fuse the system is re-set and key will start vehicle and unlock steering wheel lock. Took vehicle to Land Rover service center and was told by service advisor that this is a 'very common' problem with the model year 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. The only fix will be a replacement of entire steering column, after each shut off the ignition needs to be reset in order to start the vehicle. This temporary 'fix' can result in sudden lock of the steering wheel while driving. So far I had 2 issues that the vehicle started but did not unlock the steering wheel lock.

Electrical System problem of the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover 32

I wanted to inform you of a very serious issue with 2014 Range Rovers that may either cause an accident or strand someone many miles from civilization! I stopped the vehicle and the rotary shifter would not pop up as it was stuck down and the car was stuck in drive! I had to shut the vehicle off and then it would not shift out of drive so it would not start when the start/stop button was pushed! this is a major safety issue and needs to be addressed ASAP. My car is now at the dealer and they are saying it will be at least 2 weeks to repair.

Pedestrian was crossing against green light. When brake pedal was released, the car lurched forward as engine restarted nearly resulting in unavoidable collision with pedestrian. Start/stop system cannot be permanently disabled.

Electrical System problem of the 2010 Land Rover Range Rover 34

My 2010 Range Rover suddenly and without any warning stopped functioning on the highway. My dash board went dark and the engine turned off. We completely loss control of the car with a total systems failure. Two accidents were nearly avoided. My car was taken to reeves import motorcars for inspection, investigation and testing to find out what was the cause. Reeves had my car for about 6 days and stated the car was safe to drive and they could not find any reason for the sudden dash board and engine failure. Additionally, on many occasions reeves confirmed that they checked key engine fluid levels including oil and found that the oil level was satisfactory. Reeves provided a Land Rover multi-point inspection report which directly lists the oil fluid level as 'ok. ' five days after reeves gave us back our car in June, the Range Rover shut down again on a major highway. We towed it to another Land Rover dealership and repair shop two hours away from and this dealership confirmed that my Range Rover only had 3. 5 qts instead of the required 8. 1 qts. This new Land Rover repair shop also confirmed that there were no signs of any oil leaks. We were told the low oil level locked the engine up and now my car needs a new engine. My safety concern is whether an electrical malfunction, including faulty oil warning lights or sensors, caused multiple factory trained technicians to miss the fact that there was a dangerously low oil level. Has this type of engine failure presented in any other Land Rovers or Range Rovers across the country. I am very concerned the electrical and/or engine problem will continue to be hazard on the highway.

Electrical System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Range Rover 35

When starting the vehicle smoke appeared through the cracks of the dash board. The ignition was turned into the off position and when trying to start it again, it didn't turn, the ignition was locked. Flames then shot through the cracks on the dashboard near the radio. Within seconds the vehicle was engulfed and within 3 minutes it was totaled. Thankfully I got out the car in time.
