Bottom Line:

The DLink DNS-323 is a nice start for Windows users who wants to get into a NAS for minimal money and maybe already owns a couple of hard drives. It offers most of the same media options for NAS home entertainment as the others do such as iTunes compatibility, BitTorrent, etc. It also includes some free software for backing up Windows PC’s to the NAS.You can share a USB printer but keep in mind there is only 1 USB port.

If you want to install drives with data already on them it is unfortunate that this device does not support FAT32 or NTFS drives – meaning pretty much any Windows formatted drive.

Review Detail:

The DLink DNS-323 is labeled a network storage enclosure because it comes without hard drives. Obviously you will be adding 1 or 2 hard drives and that will turn it into a network storage device. The whole point is to have a NAS that will give you the ability to store files off of your PC, share with other PC’s on your home network and possible out to the internet.

The DLink NAS will allow you to operate with just 1 hard drive, and even gives you the option of adding a second drive later and mirroring (RAID1) without losing data. This is similar to what ReadyNAS offers with their X-RAID technology.

By default the unit will treat 2 installed hard drives as 2 separate drives for network access. Handy, but not redundant, so make sure you backup what is on this device regularly – which you should do anyway unless it IS your backup device – because there is no drive redundancy unless you configure as RAID1 (mirroring).

You can also configure the drives as JBOD with essentially adds the drives together one after the other to form a larger disk, similar to RAID0 (striping) except that striping alternates the data between the drives for higher performance.

Uses:

The DLink DNS-323 is best used in a home environment or maybe a small office where you use external USB drives now but get tired of moving them from one PC to another or want to boost file access performance by having it on a gigabit network.

The DLink NAS can be used to backup your PC’s to, consolidate data, and stream media such as movies and iTunes.

Performance will not be as good with this unit as with higher end units like the dlink or ReadyNAS but at a much cheaper price allows you to get started in network attached storage for a lot less money.

Backup Options:

Backing up your DLink DNS-323 is not as easy as, say, a ReadyNAS:

  • Local backup to an attached USB hard drive is NOT an option
  • Online backup (in the cloud backup) can only be done with a “pro” version of online backup software like Mozy Pro which allows “mapped” drives from a workstation running the software
  • UPDATE: June 16, 2010, DLink announces that support will be built in to the DNS-323 for online backup CTERA’s service. You can backup from any PC to the NAS and the NAS is then backed up to the internet (“the cloud”). Files can be accessed or recovered via web browser and users can roll back stored files to previous versions up to 30 days old.The service will start up sometime this month and all new and current DNS-323 owners will have a free 30 day trial. Annual plans are available starting from $99 per year. Pay-as-you-go plans are also available, starting from $4.99 a month.
